1and1 Review by Me, February 11, 2008
I think 1and1.com offers a cheap deal with included email redirection. It’s $9/yr for the domain registration which includes 1 email redirection. For $12/yr more, you can get 5 additional email addresses.
I gave up on isp provided email years ago. Usually too unreliable. With my own domain, I get to choose the @domain.com name.
The middle pobox package is $35/yr. It’s a win win situation getting your own domain IMO.

I think 1and1.com offers more for less. They offer domains at cheaper prices. Right now a .com is $5.99. Next month they’ll go up to $6.99, but that’s still cheaper than others I’ve seen. Plus, they offer FREE private registration.

1and1 prices are ok, just don’t ever, ever in your life think about using them to host your domains!

INTRO:
1AND1 has undercut first year registration prices for domains as a loss-leader in effort to capture market share.
BOTTOM LINE:
YOU DO NOT PURCHASE A DOMAIN NAME FROM 1AND1. YOU LEASE IT AT A BALLOONING ANNUAL FEE
WHAT TO EXPECT:
You will find a low functioning non-intuitive user interface for managing the most common tasks associated with managing your domain. You will notice the non-intuitive way in which the billing section is laid out in coordination to your domains. Given the average registrar only holds customers for one to two business cycles. 1AND1 capitalizes on their less-than-forthright communication subtle circle speak requiring you to maintain a self perpetuating contract with them at the market price they set for domains that can change any time. Domains are essentially captured indefinitely if these fees are not collected as specified per your contract. Hence, 1AND1 collects fees 5-15 times the cost of the initial ‘purchase’ of the domain.
Once these fees fall uncollected, the user is counter intuitively locked out of the billing section of his or her admin panel, thus unable to access the pertinent financial details of the account. It is my opinion that this practice is a subtle attempt to circumvent transparency to the customer.
